RETROFIT AND THE CIRCULAR ECONOMY

Retrofit and the Circular Economy

The construction sector produces 40% of all the waste that goes to landfill in the UK, which is staggering. It comes from materials wastage on site, interior refurbishments all the way up to demolition of entire buildings. The industry is getting better at recycling some waste streams but there is still much progress to be made in cutting overall landfill. This conference stream targets our perception of reusing existing buildings and how retrofit projects cut carbon emissions in use thereby saving the embodied energy in the structures of these buildings.

A circular economy is based on the principles of designing out waste and pollution, keeping products and materials in use. This stage explores how the construction sector can radically reduce its consumption of raw materials and the generation of waste.
