Virgin Steel: Opportunities and Limitations

08 Jun 2022
Stage 1
Retrofit and the Circular Economy
Due to the exceptionally high temperature needed to smelt iron ore steel production presently relies on fossil fuels. Several manufacturers have plants in development which will use hydrogen from various sources instead of coke. Speakers from the whole supply chain gather to discuss how much of an impact on overall carbon emissions from steel production these plants will achieve and more importantly what are the limitations in what is currently in the pipeline. Production will start in 2023 and 2025 in two plants presently under construction; how much of the steel we need for construction will this decarbonise and what are the opportunities for this to be extended.
