Kelly Harrison inspired me to reflect on FOOTPRINT+ by Marie-Louise Schembri, Design Director - Hilson Moran

Our journey started two years ago, with one inspiring out-of-the-blue phone call from Emily Day, about the need for private and public sectors to get together, to align, collaborate and make a real difference in the face of the #climateemergency.

We worked and reworked the content over and over because the rate of change has been immense in a very short time. The result was a highly relevant coming together of some of the best minds and disruptors in our industry, keen to learn from each other. Maybe there was something about being so close to the sea that made us reflect and relax. There were workshops, panel discussions, chance encounters, reunions, spontaneous socials, podcast interviews by Constructive Voices Radio, delicious and ethically sourced food, coffee and wine, and hundreds of sunflowers, one of which travelled home with me.

Key highlights for me were:

  • Linking carbon offsets to social value
  • Standardising and officiating a Net Zero Carbon standard to enable the public sector to accelerate viable policy changes across the UK, and much more
  • Blockchain's role in centralising market carbon data
  • Practicalities of low carbon and recovered/reused steel
  • Changes in property leasing agreements
  • Why the UK incinerates non-recycable waste

...and much more. But most of all the atmosphere and energy were just fantastic. I very much look forward to attending and hopefully speaking again at the next one. Dates have already been announced :)
