One size does not fit all. It’s about doing business better.

One size does not fit all. It’s about doing business better.

Doing business better.

This week I had the honour of being one of the opening acts at FOOTPRINT+.

It was standing room only…

A surreal experience and quite a feeling to kick-off the retrofit stage.

(No pressure)

Little did I think that this niche of real estate would become so well discussed and mainstream as it is today.

Well.

Thankfully, it is now getting the attention it deserves.

However, whilst retrofit is frequently splashed across property articles with the latest super prime, ‘radically reimagined’ project.

The movement is deeper and wider than we can possibly imagine.

So whilst I presented some projects that punched above their weight.

I also highlighted the types of initiatives than can be successfully applied to the ‘not so prime’ side of reinvention.

The everyday.

Because, as we know.

One size does not fit all.

And every single building is unique. A result of its context. And thus, this context plays a headline role in the solution.

It is both physical and economical. We cannot lose sight of that.

Unfortunately I can’t cover it all here.

But if you want to take away anything. It’s this.

Retrofit, at its very core, about creating new and exciting opportunities that do good in the world - by reusing what we already have.

Sustainability is not only about badges and facts. It’s about creating ethical and creative solutions to respond to the current and future demands of our cities, communities and built environment.

It’s about doing business better.

For the benefit of everyone.

The customer.

Society.

And the next generation.

Huge thanks to Emily Day and the whole FOOTPRINT+ team who raised the bar yet again. To my panelists throughout the day Chris Newman, Younha Rhee, Suki Gilliland, Lauren Lemcke, Philip Turner and Sofi Zickerman White.

Also great to see Pete Swift, Anna Hollyman, Gareth Atkinson, Julian Broster, Steve Gilchrist, Basil Demeroutis, Theodore Michell and many more at the event.

Plus the sunshine.
