What's the upfront Scope 3 carbon for a current Cat B office fit out?

What's the upfront Scope 3 carbon for a current Cat B office fit out?

Through an optimistic lens, the shell and core of a building last 60 years and Cat A 20 years, with multiple Cat B fit outs every 5 to 10 years. Over 20 years, the carbon impact of Cat B fit outs can equal that of the initial construction. Recognising that fit out can represent a greater proportion of WLC demonstrates how important driving down carbon emissions from this sector of the property industry is to delivering on our shared Net Zero aspirations.
Overbury with contributors Grigoriou Interiors, Hilson Moran, Hoare Lea, John Robertson Architects, Landsec, Perkins&Will, SRE, and Verte have collaborated on a cross-sector report  to quantify the current upfront carbon performance level of Cat B office fit out.

Peers in the fit out industry can use this cross-sector research as a starting point. Stakeholders will be able to  to benchmark their own limits, set upfront carbon targets, and encourage transparent industry discussions about the research that is still needed.

Day to day everyone can play a part by:
1. Setting accountability
2. Establishing baselines and limits
3. Engaging with stakeholders
4. Sharing and collaborating

These cross-sector research findings have been submitted to the UK NZC Buildings Standard to help inform the setting of upfront carbon limits for the office sector within the Standard. To find out more download your copy.
