ZERO CARBON ENERGY

Zero Carbon Energy

This stage will feature a programme of discussion and education about energy generation and decarbonisation of the National Grid and gas networks, clarify the current definition of Zero Carbon, using best practice examples, industry benchmarks and new tools for carbon prediction and accounting.

The aim – to directly reduce carbon emissions from urban regeneration and new development at community and district levels – brings together energy retailers, energy services companies, network operators, infrastructure investors, trade organisations, smart technology providers and innovators, regeneration partners (including house builders) and social landlords.

Hilson Moran is an international multi‑disciplinary engineering practice offering design consultancy services for the built environment. It is an active member of BSRIA, CTBUH, UK Green Building Council (UKGBC) and the UK District Energy Association. It advises the CIBSE Net-Zero Electricity Working Group and the UKGBC Infrastructure Task and Renewable Energy and Off-setting Groups. Hilson Moran creates net-zero carbon developments and works with with DNOs, ESCOs and investors in renewable energy.

  1. What is the optimum formula for zero carbon residential developments?

How can energy costs be managed in an all-electric, fossil fuel-free future?

Is there a sweet-spot between building fabric, heat pump and heat emitter design and efficiency and hot water storage space?

How do we use ‘smart’ to balance the additional and typically very expensive cost of electricity network capacity and infrastructure?

  2. The government have confirmed two steps towards the FUTURE Homes Standard requiring:

    • a 31% reduction in carbon emissions in 2021
    • a 75-80% reduction in emissions after 2025 and banning the installation of new gas boilers

With most large developments having a development cycle way beyond 2025 how do we plan and deliver buildings and energy infrastructure now for a development that spans two sets of Building Regulations and myriad different local planning requirements?

  3. New generations of heat networks allow us to recover what was once low-value waste heat as an important resource.

    • How do we capture all forms of waste heat?
    • At what scale does energy from waste become feasible?
    • How do we make it viable and straightforward?
    • What consumer protection is needed?
  4. Heat networks in the UK will soon be regulated to protect consumers and to ensure there is a lever for decarbonising existing heat networks that are typically powered by gas CHP.

    • Do they represent new opportunities for developers?
    •  How does it impact on the types of projects where heat networks can be deployed?
  5. Energy performance and the recovery and recycling of heat energy is still measured one building at a time.

    • How can secondary heat be shared across buildings?
    • What changes to planning law will increase energy recycling?

What people are saying about FOOTPRINT+

What people are saying about FOOTPRINT+

  • FOOTPRINT+ is the place to showcase how we can build sustainable developments and reduce the carbon footprint of building projects. In tackling the climate crisis, these are the conversations we need to be having.
    Peter Kyle
MP for Hove, Shadow Minister for Justice
  • Despite the global impact of COVID-19 the UK property industry is resilient. FOOTPRINT will provide a forum for everyone to create a deliverable agenda for sustainable growth in the UK property market.
    Francis Hilton
    Pelican Developments
  • The construction sector has a huge role to play in enabling Local Authorities to meet ambitious carbon zero targets. I believe that FOOTPRINT will be the event that supports the creative discussions and working relationships required to achieve Zero Carbon living.
    Duncan Baker-Brown
Architect, Lecturer at University of Brighton & Campaigner for Circular Economy
  • At last an event that addresses the key issues facing design, construction and development in the UK. The rich mix of consultants, clients, stakeholders and government together with the great location will make Footprint a huge success.
Paul Monaghan Director of Allford Hall Monaghan Morris Architects
Liverpool City Region Design Champion and founding member of Architects Declare
  • The idea of the jobs fair on the last day is brilliant. It's exactly what school and university leavers need, and as a CDO, I realise that finding high calibre candidates to work for your organisation is a hugely time absorbing process.
    Adam Brockley
    Founder of Scape Student Living
  • As we move to create the ‘new normal’ post Covid, we have an unprecedented opportunity to re-write the rules around our environmental impact on the planet, this conference does exactly that.
    Gavin Stewart
Executive Director Brighton & Hove Economic Partnership
  • FOOTPRINT is a hugely exciting opportunity to address the climate emergency which we all face as global citizens.
    James Blakey
    Planning Director Moda Living
  • FOOTPRINT+ has been set up to answer a need in the property market. We have all traipsed off to the South of France previously to meet up and discuss property issues. This is no longer a responsible action given the carbon footprint of getting there. Combined with the exit of Britain from the EU, we, in the UK market need to meet and discuss our national and international concerns. FOOTPRINT+ is set up to permit us to do this in an accessible, affordable and responsible way
    William Edgerley
    Director Edge Ahead Limited
  • The climate emergency is the biggest challenge humanity is facing. At WSP we are proud to be the catalysts of change in our industry. Now, we all need to come together to re-invent the way we design, the way we build and the way live. Footprint+ will help us do this
