THE TEAM

The FOOTPRINT+ founders are from Brighton & Hove and have come together to create a unique annual exhibition and conference in the city which showcases cutting-edge ways to tackle the carbon footprint created by the property industry. The founding partners behind the event includes award winning architects Tim Pyne and Emily Day together with property developer Sophie Law-Smith.

They all live and work in Brighton and Hove.

Tim Pyne: Founder

Tim Pyne: Founder

As founder and owner of WORK, Tim designed over £50m worth of the Millennium Dome exhibitions for New Labour, and won 2 RIBA awards for the 4 zones he designed. This included the Environment zone which used Brighton beach as a backdrop. Tim was founding Creative Director of 100% Design and Detail in the UK, Tokyo and Moscow.

Other events include:

  • Creative Director to The International Festival of Business in Liverpool 2014
  • Creative Director of the London Boat Show
  • Creative Director to the London Motor Show, the Blenheim Fashion Group and DMG Worldwide.
  • Designer of London Fashion Week for several years
  • Designer of large private and lottery funded museum and visitor-attraction projects including the National Maritime Museum, the Commonwealth Institute and the Science Museum.

Emily Day: Founder

Emily Day: Founder

Emily Day is a chartered architect with over 20 years of experience working on large scale projects. Emily has worked with many key players within the industry; local authorities, developers and financial institutions which has given her a unique insight into the needs of the different parties


Local authority clients have included:

  •  City of Nottingham
  •  London Borough of Hackney
  •  Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea
  •  Rutland Council
  •  North Devon District Council
  •  Cornwall Council

Projects completed include major residential
developments and urban planning, mixed use developments, speculative office, hospitality, educational estates and community developments up to £6bn in value.

Sophie Law-Smith: Founder

Sophie is property developer with an engineering background and a strong network across the south coast. Sophie is passionate about the built environment and how we can work collaboratively towards a more sustainable future for the industry. As well as FOOTPRINT+ she is active across multiple platforms throughout the Greater Brighton region, supporting businesses and community initiatives such as:

  • Trustee for Hove Civic Society 
  • Director of local business collaborative initiative; Design Brighton
  • Communications Manager for Constructing Excellence Sussex Club
  • Architectural, Planning and PR business support.

Hazel Needham: Marketing Executive

Hazel works for an award-winning B2B events marketing agency and specialises in sustainability events. She assists with the overall delivery of marketing campaigns, from creating assets for emails and socials to providing clients with live event support. Hazel has worked with a range of event organisers including Reuters, The Berggruen Institute and Mash Media.

Having graduated from Warwick University with a First-Class English Literature and Creative Writing Degree, Hazel is also a champion in copywriting. She currently writes fortnightly blog posts for a climate change E-commerce start up.

Fernanda Clemente Pinto: Marketing Manager

Fred Burns: Film Director

Fred Burns: Film Director

Fred Burns is a film director and DOP based in Brighton specialising in documentaries, branded content and live music events. He has worked on films commissioned by Netflix, Sky Arts, the BBC and Channel4, amongst others.

He is a big believer in film’s power to create empathy, awareness and inspiration and volunteers to make video content for organisations he cares about. These include Time To Act (climate change), Make Votes Matter (proportional representation for the UK) and the Labour Party.

His directorial debut feature documentary Basically, Johnny Moped was shown worldwide including Picturehouse Cinemas (UK), The ICA (London), KOKO RockNRoll Cinema (London), Sheffield Doc/Fest, IDFA (Amsterdam), IN-Edit (Barcelona) and CIMMFest (Chicago).

Miriam Sigler: Operations

As Founding Director of Ways & Means Events, Miriam brings her vast breadth of industry knowledge to projects large and small. Miriam’s long list of attributes include her uncompromising work ethic, attention to detail and ‘work hard – play hard’ attitude. Coupled with her love of teamwork and head-on attitude to problem solving, she has become a well-respected people member of the industry. Her wealth of knowledge in all facets of events management has seen her direct countless successful projects including launches and re-brands as well as long standing successful event portfolios. With her deep understanding of what stakeholders require from each event, she is truly an asset to every event. Any project Miriam undertakes is creative, well-planned, detailed and colourful. With more than twenty years experience working in events management, Miriam has seen it all.

Aidan Walker: Conference

Aidan Walker: Conference

Aidan’s MA in History from Cambridge University was a highly appropriate education, he claims, for his ‘first career’ in furniture design and cabinet making –
itself an admirable preparation for 20 years of writing for, editing and directing design magazines. He has editorially directed almost all the professional UK design magazines.

As Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and director of Aidan Walker Associates, he now creates, curates, presents and chairs conference and seminar programmes such as ‘Art for Tomorrow’ for The New York Times and the conference programmes for the London Design Festival’s Global Design Forum, Design Shanghai, Design China Beijing and Grand Designs Live.
Aidan lives in rural Sussex with his family, his dogs, his Ducati racing motorbike and his guitars.

James Blakey: Planning Advisor

James Blakey: Planning Advisor

James is the UK Planning Director at Moda Living who are delivering inclusive amenity rich build to rent schemes across the UK from Scotland to the south coast. James has nearly 30 years of property industry planning experience and has served on a series of multi-disciplinary and development company boards during his career. James is a member of the Royal Town Planning Institute, is a Trustee on a number of charities as well as being a Governor at Manchester Cathedral working alongside the Lord Lieutenant for Greater Manchester.

James spends his time with Government, local authorities and community representatives in creating Next Generation Neighbourhoods and buildings of exceptional quality and lifestyle valve.

Prior to Covid-19 and when asked where he is based, James would say “on the train” given the breadth of the Moda portfolio and his caseload. If asked now, James would say travelling seamlessly between Teams and Zoom.

William Edgerley: Developer Advisor

William's core skills are in implementing, structuring and negotiating property projects and investments - skills gained over 25 years in the property industry. As MD or CEO of various P & O
companies, William has been responsible for many high-value and high-profile property projects.
These include widely differing projects, from the London Gateway development in Thurrock - a complex joint venture. To Drakes Circus in Plymouth and the York Science Park.

William has experience leading teams including professionals such as lawyers, architects, planners, engineers, project managers and accountants by providing support to colleagues and he is always excited to see projects complete successfully.

Ian McCarthy:  Associate 

Ian McCarthy is a town planner and chartered surveyor with a strong commitment to building viable, vibrant and inclusive places.

 During an extensive career, he has contributed to the economic regeneration of Manchester and Liverpool and more recently, established and delivered the UK's International Business Festival 2014-2018 as Festival Director. Ian is a Director of several not-for-profit organisations including the Liverpool Biennial, Shakespeare North Trust and his own consultancy.
